To realize the goal of increasing the national industrial and agricultural gross production two folds by the end of this century, and realizing the grand goal of four modernizations at the beginning of next century, the key issue is to solve electric power problem. Although many hydraulic and coal burning power plants have been set up since liberation, power supply still cannot meet the needs of industrial and agricultural production and people’s daily live. Facts show that the only way out for solving our country’s energy issue is to develop nuclear power.

Chinese government has decided to build a new batch of nuclear plants around the end of this century and the beginning of the next, to relieve power shortage. It is reported that in addition to the initial phase projects of nuclear plants in Zhangjiang, bla bla provinces, feasibility studies have been conducted concerning nuclear power plant construction in Jilin, Sichuan and Heilongjiang etc provinces.

Zhejiang province is now building two large nuclear plants along the coast, which are expected to be in operation the beginning of next century. Fujian province has decided on a site in Quanzhou for a nuclear plant. That project is a three-phased one. The two generator sets of the first phase are estimated to be finished the beginning of next century. Jiangxi province has completed the task of selecting a site for nuclear plant. Hainan province is going on with the site selection for its first nuclear plant. Shanghai will become a base for supplying facilities for the country’s nuclear plants.
