Instruction: Give a numberical value 1-4 according to how accurate the statements describe your situation, 1 being the least and 4 beling the most.

You should do this periodically to monitor your listening performance and strategy change. You can download this questionaire from:

Part I. Problems

1.I have problems in understanding single sentence and/or short coumpound sentences.

2. I have problem in understanding short conversations and passages of about 2 minutes' length.

3. I have problem in understanding long conversations and passages of above 2 minutes' length.

4.I have problem in dealing with CBC type questions.

5. I have problem in dealing with content questions.

6. I have problem in dealing with point-summarizing questions.

7. I have problem in dealing with multiple choice questions.

8. I have problem in writing the gist of the main idea.

9. I cannot learn new words and expressions through listening only.

10. I cannot take notes when I listen.

Part II. Causes

1. I did not master the taught vocab and expressions.

2. I generate a meaning for a sound segment and go from there, disregarding its role in the sentence.

3. I can understand a considerable long sound segment but I do not know their position in the sentence.

4. My mind stops working as I come upon a sound segment that I do not understand.

5. I am discouraged if the listening material is about a strange subject eventhough it is related to my texts in vocab and structure.

6. I am not motivated to listen to anything not helpful in passing listening quizes.

Part III. My Listening Strategies

1.I have to understand almost every word or most of the words before I can understand the whole text.

2. I first grasp the general topic of the text and use it to figure out the meaning of word that I am not familiar with.

3. I am diversified in that I can pick up meanings here and there without a requiring a continous understanding of the audio input. I am comfortable with the gain-lose alternation.

4. I am focused in that if I lose the meaning of one segment, I give up and lose all the text.

5. I regularly guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from their context.

6.I try to use extra-linguistic cues (intonation,pauses,stresses etc.) to determine the tones and attitudes of the speaker in the text.

7. I regularly take notes.

8. I ask my deskmate to clarify unfamiliar words.

9. I have special ways of listening to special sentence structures that are very different from English, such as ba-sentence, long pre-modifier sentence, etc.

10. I use dictionary in self-listening to find out the characters of a sound segment that I think is crucial to my understanding of the whole text.

Part IV. My Listening Activities

1. I only listen in class, no or little listening outside class.

2. When I do listen outside the class, I only listen to class materials.

3. I only listen when a teacher is available for explanation.

4. I am an autonomous listener,a script is enough for self-checking.

5. I listen to materials not reguired by classwork.

6. I do 5 for fun.

7. I do 5 for additional serious training.

Part V. Listening Awareness

1.I know I can access many soundfiles and scripts from the classroom computers.

2. I know I can access many soundfiles and scripts from Aiso library classroom computers.

3. I know Aiso library has a collection of Chinese textbooks with tapes, and has tape players to use in the library

4.I know Aiso library has a collection of Chinese movies.

5.I know DLI has a Chinese language channel, two Chinese TV channels that I can watch in the classroom.

5. I knwo that my teacher has extra tapes and is willing to let me use them.

6. I know that my teacher has a website with links to online audio resources such as online radios.

7. I know that constant listening can improve not only listening comprehension but also speaking in that it helps shaping correct pronunciation, naturalizing my utterances and stimulating imitation.
