Asked what is most difficult in life and at this moment it is what I have taken pen in hand to do, for I struggle with where and how to begin. Blessed are we to cross paths with someone who will change us forever...

WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
It was a rainy day but one for celebration when we first met. How small and delicate was the babe in the crook of his arm and how proud he was. But, being a veteran of war, it had taken its toll and alcohol had soon become his chosen path. "Daddy where are you going, who will help her grow?"
He stumbled; he staggered; he blacked out. The babe in arms would soon start school and now was the oldest of three. Alcohol was taking its toll and soon he had no path. "Daddy where are you going, who will help them grow?"
He yelled; he raged; he abused. The babe in arms was making her first communion. He is a full blown alcoholic. "Daddy where are you going, who will help them grow?"
A wound from surgery performed months before is not healing and has ulcerated. If he doesn't quit drinking, he will die. "Daddy don't die, who will help them grow?"
A new miracle of life begins and he is past forty. He is reborn into sobriety. Two years and some stumbles later he begins to give what he learns away. There are four children now. "Daddy come home, who will help them grow?"
With seven children he retires early to be better able to help and reach people. He continues to attend daily church services. He walks at least two miles every day. He is a Goodfellow volunteer. He attends AA meetings every day of the week. He visits jail inmates weekly. He is on call twenty-four hours a day for anyone who asks for help. He makes daily visits to the local detox centre, and his home has long since become a halfway home for those who want sobriety.
He stands five foot three and has a calming effect on many a violent man under the influence of alcohol or drugs. His clear blue eyes speak from the heart and from experience. He has learned humility and does not know he has.
Bill Boissonneault passed away April 19, 1999 and left a bittersweet legacy. This man and his concept of sobriety reached hundreds of people and spanned three generations. He lived AA as its fore founders had written.
"Daddy where are you going?" To Heaven, as sure as you are in the heart of this daughter you held in the crook of your arm so many years ago when we first met. You took me along and will always be with me, because I now take you along. Dad you live on. I have written a dedication to my father and those people like him who have crossed paths with someone and who have changed the people they touched forever. |
