Style: Hard, funky, deep, discoey, Latin flavored house/techno
Ken was born in the early seventies, spawned from parents who were and still are heavily into disco and funk. Ken played drums for 8 years along with Keyboards. In the early 80’s he was introduced to Electro and Hip-hop; he began buying vinyl shortly there after. Some of his favorites were Whodini, Tour de Force, Herby Hancock, 10 Speed, Isley Brothers, Barkays … the list goes on and on. In 1985 he was introduced to House music from his cousin Mike B, who was an early Philly house DJ. When asked what he remembered most about those days Ken said, “I can remember when Mikey used to drag me out to clubs; even though I was still not of age, I was let in because he was playing that night. This is where I first heard the remix of Donna Summer’s ‘I feel love’ into ‘It’s all In My Face’ by Loose Joints. My cousin would tell me stories of Paradise Garage and the Legendary Larry Levan and how people cried during his sets. This is when I really started getting into house music.” By 1989 Mike B. married and turned
his vinyl collection over to Ken.
Ken and Juan met in 1996 and found that they had similar backgrounds in music. Then they got booked to play at a party together. They spun a magical set of hard, funky, disco House together and the East Coast Boogiemen were born. Unlike other tag teams, they are both continually mixing, scratching, E.Q.ing, mixing records in backwards, cutting to off beats, the whole nine. They even bring a sampler and EFX on occasion to take the music and truly make it their own! Juan was born in Argentina in 1975, but was raised in Bolivia for the first ten years of his life. There he became accustomed to Latin music and Bolivian folk music. Born from young parents, he grew up listening to more 70’s up beat music such as: Rock, Disco and Funk. Although he could not understand many of the English lyrics in the songs he listened to, he could always relate to the happy feelings they brought on. In 1986 he migrated to the States to be with his parents who left the year before. Picking up the English language relatively quickly, he could finally listen to the radio and understand the music he had grown up loving. House music entered his life after hearing a sacred Doc Martin mixed compilation. After attending a couple of parties, he decided he wanted to make people feel the same way he felt listening to House music. It was all over; he purchased equipment, and got into serious debt. “It has all been worth it, I have not had one regret, seeing people dancing and smiling to my creations is what I live for. When Ken and I first played together we were very competitive, but we have grown with each other, we know where we are going in our sets, and are always surprising each other.” - Juan Zapata They are now working on their own tracks and have completed may of them. “We are very picky about our own music, and are now sending them out. There is nothing that makes us happier than presenting our visions, love and energy to a crowd who is willing to ride it.” - Ken Christensen Residencies: Unity Productions (residents
