Paul Worthington was born on August 8, 1977. He grew up listening to his two older brothers’ large variety of music. For most of his life he listened to Punk music; NOFX, Pennywise, Strung Out, and No Use For A Name were some of his favorites. Paul had never really been into playing his own music, “I remember when my Grandma Margaret gave me a (Yamaha) Keyboard back in Jr. High… I really didn’t play with it all that much. The one thing that I do remember messing with a lot was the weird samples like voices and coughs.” The Summer of 1994 would change Paul’s life forever. This is where he was handed his first Rave tape; it was a live recording of DJ Dan. “It was not repetitive like the hard core tapes I’ve heard other people playing. It was phat funky beats that were constantly changing up, but never ending,” Paul said reminiscing, “Of course someone stole it!” It was this tape that sparked his interest to go out and see what Raving is all about, so he decided to go to Magic Wednesdays with his friend Summer. “I remember the beautiful girls dancing to great music, lights going all over the place, people making out in the corners, and the whole place smelled like kind buds,” he said. He became a regular at Magic Wednesdays during the Summer time, and attended bigger events in 1995. Late July 1997 Paul sold his car and moved to Springfield, Virginia. It only took him three days to meet his first raver and he went out to Pollen with him that evening. The first three months in DC were very exciting and fun, but shortly there after it started to die. “I knew there was something else that I needed to do. I wanted to give back to the scene what it gave me,” said Paul. So Paul and his girlfriend, Susy, began to throw their own parties as Unity Productions. They threw three Monday night parties at a large nightclub called Tracks in DC. In January of 1999 Unity Productions took over Tracks Thursday night party called Life. Paul and Susy did really good on this weekly party (averaged 1,000 or more every week). They did so good that they were able to move and buy some brand new Technics SL-1200M3D turntables and a Vestax PMC-17A mixer. Paul’s dream was coming true. Now not only was he able to give back to the scene with his parties, but he was able to express himself by spinning in front of thousands of people. He waited only one month before he played out, because he could play in the 9:00 - 10:00 or 10:30 time slot where there were not as many people in the main room. “It was a small risk actually.
I played some down tempo trance, let the records play almost all the way
through, and mixed on the easy parts. Yeah, in the beginning of the
nights I messed up, but there were only 10 to 20 people in the main room
at that time. I only told people to come out early when I had my
mixing down, then I was playing a lot harder stuff, mixing on the beats,
and rocking the crowd until midnight. By June, there were four or
five hundred people in the room when I finished my sets. I got a
lot of props from those kids; they are die hard Unity fans.” - Paul Worthington
