Faculty requests
probe into violence

Editorial published in the University of Toledo Independent Collegian.
January 25, 2001.

"We the undersigned are concerned with the handling of the events of the evening of January 19, 2001 at a party at the Student Union Building. Our concern is generated by the report in The Independent Collegian; we write out of concern for the well-being of students at the University of Toledo.

The initiation, but more importantly, the escalation, of the violence that occurred on Saturday night warrants immediate open investigation and discussion with input from all campus constituencies, including, but not limited to, students, staff, and faculty.

University communities must be policed with great care. Certainly, whomever was in authority or in charge of organizing the event should be questioned as to the size of the event and terms on which people were attending. In addition, however, reasons for the escalation of events, including the calling in of heavy reinforcements from two different jurisdictions should be publicly elaborated. If the reports in the Independent Collegian are accurate as to the treatment of students attempting to leave the scene, we must discuss what kind of training and direction police who are charged with overseeing such an event receive. Additionally, we would like to know it the University of Toledo will provide adequate legal representation for the students arrested given that student fees fund legal services.

Finally, we must discuss forthrightly what kinds of changes are going to be made in light of this event that we must realize could have been prevented."
