I think Mr. Martin's point in this is that Ray can not possibly know how to care for someone as a mate unless he can care for someone as a father/friend. Once he begins to really care for her, hurt for her, assist her, he becomes more able to define what he wants in life. He makes some attempts to slip into his old way by sleeping with women he cares nothing for.
Deep down it is fear that makes him do this. How can he be hurt if he does the hurting? How can he be hurt if he calls all the shots? He is afraid of another divorce, another real commitment, a real chance of having his heart broken.
I think that his relationship with Mirabelle goes into a father daughter mode mostly because she is looking for a "father" to tell/show her that she is OK. Her real dad could not do this. Whether from the war or what, we don't know for 100% certain.
Both Mirabelle and Ray are the healing potion that the other needs to become human again.
And you can tell it was a real love, a healing love, because they remain friends. And what is the most basic love...friendship.
