I am not sure it was supposed to be as much funny as pathetic in a way. Here are two people who could have easily gotten others on their side. If they had gone to their neighbors and daughter etc and told them they had decided to take a second honeymoon-type trip for Christmas. To celebrate it together etc...instead of the snotty, secretlike way they did it, I think it would have shocked everyone less.

LIke at work, he leaves notes. They really don't tell anyone until the time comes for an actual holiday event, like buying the tree from the Scouts. That is rude and harsh.

The one neighbor, Vic, who organizes everything, is funny too in his ability to organize. In the end he saves the day. I think the whole neighborhood feels insulted because there is no real reason given for the Krank's actions...n=one that they can understand anyway.

I think the FUNNY was supposed to come from the sad situations the Kranks get themselves into by being selfish and deciding to shut everyone out of their lives. If they had told everyone it was to celebrate in a different way because they had a wonderful opportunity to, then I think the neighbors/everyone would have felt better. Instead, they put the emphasis on the "me" of it...where really it has been anyway...

Just a few thoughts....
