I think that is the main message. Do not be selfish in your life...in any way. In the end, Luther sees the people he spurned so meanly coming to his aid. They give. Not because he is a nice deserving guy, but because they care about him as a human being, his wife and daughter as nice ladies.
In the end, he sacrifices that which was most precious to him (at that point) to do for others who might not have another Christmas together...he gives.
And he restores his soul.
Give and ye shall receive. Love thy neighbor.
