I found it sort of sad that Hot's dad had a hard time expressing affection for him. Mr. Carter continually says how much he strived to please his dad. He certainly was greatly affected by how his dad treated others. I think that is where he first learned that being fair and honest and a hrad worker are the things that get you ahead in the world.
I think perhaps lots of men were like that. I wonder if there are many now???
