I was also impressed by Jimmy Carter's expression of embarrassment etc because of his non-action to instances of segregation and prejudice when he was growing up. Though I think he did really well considering the times he grew up in. His attitudes were obviously shaped by his parents.

I grew up right after desegregation started. So I never really saw forced segregation. I don't ever remember seeing whites only signs etc. The schools were already combined by the time I started school. Many attitudes remained which I now understand a bit better in hindsight. Thankfully, where I grew up things were not as bad as things are here. Here the public schools are still in deplorable condition from the times of desegregation. When integration was forced here, all the whites left the public schools. Most of the public schools in the area are still awful. No one sends their kids to them if they can help it. It is sad.
