The irony of Billy's family full of war heroes: His great-great-grandfather, who he was named after, was considered a war hero when in actuality he spent the whole war in prison. His grandfather never saw any action when a transport plane he was in was shot down right in the beginning of his tour of duty. He then spent the rest of his time behind a desk. His father was killed when his plane was shot down. We don't really have any more details on him. Eddie seemed different from the rest of the Mann's so maybe he actually was a war hero.

I wonder if the grand stories of the first William Mann's war battles would have been told if he had not found the chest full of gold? Did the town want to make him into a hero because he was suddenly rich?
