I wish the author would have given us either more or less information on Billy's mother. I guess I am just left wondering why did she leave him. That and of course, why did she leave him to be raised by an alcoholic old man.
Near the end the book leads you to believe that she was sent Eddie's letters so she probably knew that he was dead by the time she had Billy. So she probably knew that she would be alone to raise him but that also meant that she knew that the grandfather would be raising the baby alone.
The book ends, do you think that Billy goes to look for his mother? I would like to think that he did.
