I agree, I was somewhat sceptical about the drunken grandfather taking care of the baby. But you have to remember that the family ghosts were taking care of him too. He even talks about the fact that his grandfather would have stepped on him and killed him if not for the "jet like his father flew in Vietnam" that was seen at that moment. Perhaps his father was caring for him even then.
