It seems to me that the only one who actually fought in war was the only one who actually died. That was Eddie.
I found it sort of funny that they kind of just did not say anything and let people assume that they got their wounds etc from fighting.
Also, I think the author was saying something about the futility of war and how stupid it and its agencies are. Remember how they kept sending grandfather back and forth until something finally happened to him. DUH!
