Volvo Olympian
Northern Counties Palatine 2
Oh Dear, Very Low Floor. 3828 is seen on service 58 instead of its usual X10. This was not the only one straying on that day there was another two not on the X10. 3829 on the 64/5. And 3830 made an appearance on the 1/24/24A/27/27A.
The Volvo Olympian was the successor to the Leyland Olympian, and the Palatine 2 body was Northern Counties answer to Optare's stylish Spectra. These vehicles were the last step entrance buses delivered to Go North East, and the last in the North East. Go North East opted for these as the double decker fleet grew old very quickly. At that time it was mainly Leyland Atlanteans and Olympians. When the 23 Volvos arrived at South Shields Depot they replaced all of the Atlanteans at South Shields, and displaced Olympians to other depots. However four Volvos didn't stay a South Shields for long, 3830-3 were transferred to Percy Main for use on service 308. For a couple of years the Volvos stayed at their depots. However in late 2000 DFDS seaways specified for 2 modern deckers to be converted for their services. It was thought that these were to replace the last two Atlanteans 3538/40. However it didn't turn out that way, 3828/9 were transferred from South Shields so that 3832/3 could be converted into DFDS buses with Larger luggage racks and less seats.
However 3828/9s stay at Percy Main only lasted about a year and they along with 3830/1 were transferred to Sunderland Road for use on the X10. One of the batch 3816 was recreated as an OOC model in 1998/9, with the blinds reading: 527 NEWCASTLE.

Photos of the Palatine 2
Here we see 3832 on service 315, the bus is at Rake Lane Hospital. To tell the truth, I got this bus from the stop before then got of at the stop where this photo was taken. As you can see it is the two tone blue and white DFDS Seaways Livery.
Here is a night time shot of a Volvo Olympian at Jarrow Bus Station, this was taken with a digital camera that I borrowed from school. It is on service 527 to South Shields.
Here is a shot of 3831 in the Tyne Tunnel, this photo was taken from Volvo Olympian 3830. Both of these vehicles are on the 319 going in both directions. Also this shot is a bit difficult now as the route is ran by Potatoes (SPuDs) and they now rarely pass in the Tyne Tunnel.
Here is a Volvo Olympian entering Jarrow Bus Station. It is on service 532 to Newcastle.
