Eric looked down at the table into an empty coffee cup. "I knew my actions that night would permanently damage, if not destroy my career as a cop, but I did them anyway. I would not stand to see that wolf killed. It was an endangered species, capable of recovery, and one of mother nature's lives." He looked back at Brian. "The wolf did make it alright, and Sargent Conner did have me reprimanded. I was put on probation. During my probation period, I took the wolf under my wing and nursed him back to health, I even trained him for police work. After many months and a lot of paperwork, I managed to get him accepted as my K-9 partner. "The first call we got was once again with Sargent Conner. We arrived at the scene, and I went to check out the premises, leaving Conner in the cruiser with Del. "I heard Del barking and growling and ran back to the cruiser. When I got there, Del had attacked Conner. "The next day I was discharged. They blamed me for endangering an officer with an unstable animal. I later found out that Conner had taunted Del into attacking him, but there's no way anyone would believe me." "Why not?" Brian wondered. Eric paused for a long time, then finally spoke. "Because Del told me." There was another long pause. "And now you probably think I'm crazy." "Only as crazy as I am then." Brian added. "What?" Eric wasn't sure how to take Brian's answer, it seemed as though a joke, but there was too much seriousness in his voice. Brian avoided the question, "If we're exchanging weirdness, I might as well give you mine." "Uh?" "After I had been arrested for breaking and entering, I had to spend the night in jail, luckily it had been a slow night in the big city, and I was the only one in the cell."
