EuroLights

Sky Sports interview with Oval Race Management's Bob Berridge

Autosport International, Jan 2002 - transcription by Unofficial F3000

Q: Bob, tell us about the EuroLights championship you've announced.

A: "It's to go alongside ASCAR which is basically...it's [EuroLights is] an aspirational formula - it'll slot in between Formula 3000 and Formula 3. We will be attempting to get some form of relationship going across in the States to either CART or IRL and the winner of the championship we're looking to get either a race or a test in CART or IRL. What we're doing at the moment this year in 2002 is just testing the water, getting the car reliable, get it running in testing, and basically depth-sounding the level of interest that we've got, and talk to the teams with a view to getting it up and running in 2003."

Q. Has this idea come from the fact that obviously the Indy Lights championship is no more, is this to try and encourage it mostly in America or are you going to try and really push it for Europe?

A: "I think that the European scene badly needs oval racing and EuroSpeedway [Lausitz] is now up and running, Rockingham is now up and running - the guys did a remarkable job at Rockingham in the first year to get it running from basically scratch. To actually run a CART meeting in September for me was a remarkable achievement. There are plans for three or four other oval circuits and I think that it will be a natural evolution that oval racing will develop in Europe, and I think it will become a big thing in Europe, and I don't think it will need America really, in the long run."

Q: Lola have just designed the chassis of the car - what's the actual spec on it?

A: "The spec is...basically it's very similar to an F3000 car so we kept the cost down, with the unit cost of production. We're looking to get 4000km per engine, we're looking 450-500bhp, we're looking to do something like 180-190mph around Rockingham and probably faster at EuroSpeedway."
