Formula Holden / Formula Brabham / F4000 / F3000 V6 / Formula Tasman
Formula Holden was Australia's F3000 equivalent, mostly using
F3000/F.Nippon chassis twinned to a 3.8 litre Holden Ecotec/Buick V6 engine (from 2005
joined by a 3.6L Holden HFV6 Alloytec V6 engine). A variety of cars built specifically for
the series were raced too, from the likes of Cheetah, Elfin, Shrike and Spa. A number of
notable talents raced in the series before going on to international fame, including Mark
Webber, Scott Dixon and Will Power, along with domestic talents who would find fame in V8
Supercars - Mark Skaife, Rick Kelly, Jason Bright etc. Between 1989 and 2004 the champion
was awarded the CAMS Gold Star for the Australian Drivers' Championship, but this moved to
Australian F3 for 2005.
The series went under a variety of names
during its history. A concept initially developed as Formula Australia, manufacturer
backing ensured it was Formula Holden which was launched for the 1989 season. This name
only lasted until 1991, when Holden removed its official backing. As Jack Brabham was a
director of the series' marketing arm, Formula Brabham was chosen as a replacement name
from 1991 to 1995, before Holden returned with support again. With dwindling grids the
series was relaunched as Formula 4000 in 2003, with little success. Another relaunch in
2007, as F3000 V6, generated even less interest, and the category was merged with the
OzBOSS series for a variety of single seaters. By now it was very much a club/Formula
Libre series rather than the springboard for aspiring professionals it was in its heyday.
After OzBOSS fizzled out after a few races in 2008, a couple of F3000 cars at best could
be seen turning out in the early rounds of the new Formula Tasman category of the
Independent Race Series.
In addition to the main Australian
championship, there were several other mini-series held on occasion; the Pan-Pacific
series, a New Zealand series, the Tasman Cup and the Tech 2U Internet Services Trophy.
There were also a number of non-championship
races.
