Race Report
Free practice:
The inaugural round of the Italian Formula 3000 championship at Vallelunga saw a variety of drivers heading the 14 car field during the practice session, qualifying and race. Two British drivers impressed in practice; Mark Shaw, abandoning the international series after one season, and Darren Turner sandwiched the second-placed Giorgio Vinella, another former backmarker in F3000. Veteran of F3000 Marco Apicella was only seventh fastest.
Qualifying:
The surprise pole-sitter on Saturday was Polo Villaamil. The former Elide driver was competing this season with Coloni in both the main series and the Italian series (in the non-clashing rounds). Apicella, the 1994 All-Japan F3000 champion, improved on his practice form to start in second place. Werner Lupberger, a veteran of two F3000 seasons, started third ahead of two impressive F3000 rookies. Durango's Paolo Montin qualified fourth while the Indonesian driver Ananda Mikola (from Italian F3) was fifth. The British Redgrave Racing pair of Shaw and Turner dropped down to 8th and 9th.
Race:
Marco Apicella used his vast F3000 (and brief F1) experience to win the first ever Italian F3000 round from the front row of the grid. Paolo Montin was an impressive second, having squeezed between Villaamil and Lupberger at the start, following a moment's indecision from the latter. Villaamil couldn't respond to Montin's charge, and ended the day third. Worse luck was suffered by Lupberger; he slipped back to sixth by the end. Vinella was a benefactor, reaching fourth in the results, while Mikola did well to finish where he started on his F3000 debut, in fifth place. Shaw and Turner moved up one spot from their grid positions, but couldn't reach the points their practice showings suggested were possible. Montin's teammate at Durango, Jaroslaw Wierczuk, had a less successful time than the Italian, colliding with Riccardo Moscatelli on the ninth lap and being forced to pit for a new nose.
