F3000 Italia 1999

Round 6: Misano (I), 3rd October 1999

Race Report:

Once again there were a few changes in the entry list for round 6 of F3000 Italia. After three races with Coloni, Marcelo Battistuzzi switched back to the Redgrave Racing team with whom he won on his debut at Monza. Polo Villaamil returned to the International series and was replaced at Coloni by Italian series debutant Dino Morelli. A former podium finisher in International F3000, he had not scored any points in his sporadic outings since his DKS Racing Lola crashed through the tyre barriers at the Nurburgring in 1997 leaving him with serious leg injuries. He had raced a few times for the Coloni team in International F3000 already in 1999. Another F3000 regular, Fabrizio Gollin, was also making his Italian F3000 debut for Prema, the Italian team which entered F3000 in 1998.

Qualifying:

Marco Apicella took pole position for the penultimate round of F3000 Italia, the second to be held at the small Misano circuit. Marcelo Battistuzzi started second, followed by Thomas Biagi and F3000 regular Fabrizio Gollin. Row three was occupied by championship leader Giorgio Vinella and Werner Lupberger. Northern Ireland's Dino Morelli, whose F3000 career had been also interrupted by another heavy crash in 1995, qualified in seventh position.

Race:

Shaw and Yoong collide at the start

At the start Mark Shaw, starting 10th, collided with one car, spinning off to the right into Alex Yoong's car. Both were forced to retire immediately. Championship leader Vinella took the race victory, extending his lead in the series, with Lupberger and Biagi the other men on the podium. Vinella had been lying third, before polesitter Apicella collided with Marcelo Battistuzzi with just two laps to go. Thus Vinella was handed the victory and Battistuzzi forced to retire. Apicella recovered but finished well down the order. Morelli made an impressive debut by finishing in fourth, while F3000 rookies Gabriele Lancieri and Ananda Mikola finished fifth and sixth. Paolo Montin broke his front wing on the debris from the start-line crash, and was forced to come in for a new nose.
