LINCOLN GOES FIRST IN 2003 OLA JUNIOR “A” DRAFT

Sunday January 12, 2003 TORONTO -- The Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) today announced the results of the 2003 OLA Junior “A” Draft. Jamie Lincoln of Elora, Ontario was selected first overall by the Brampton Excelsiors. Lincoln was sixth in overall scoring at the 2002 Provincial Midget "A" Championships as a member of the Elora Mohawks. In eleven games, he collected 35 points and now joins Brampton as the top draft pick in consecutive years. Last January, the Excelsiors selected Daryl Veltman of Georgetown first overall. "We are extremely happy to have Jamie as part of the Brampton Excelsiors organization. He is an excellent two-way player with good size and a great scoring touch" said Excelsior Head Coach Jeremy Tallevi. "I expect Jamie to make an immediate contribution to our team this season." Other early first round selections were Michael McLeod of Owen Sound picked second by Orillia; Peterborough-native Matt Cowie of Nepean picked third overall by Peterborough; Trevor Colm of Oakville selected fourth by Kitchener and Adam Holton of Halton Hills picked fifth by the Burlington Chiefs. According to OLA Junior “A” Commissioner Dean McLeod, the Junior “A” Draft was initiated in 1976 as a vehicle to provide the top graduating, non-affiliated Midget players with an opportunity to showcase their skills at the Junior “A” level. “Additionally,” says McLeod, “the draft helps create parity among league members by establishing selections based on reverse order of finish from the previous season. A significant number of draft choices over the years have participated in NLL, Mann Cup and Minto Cup championships.” At the 2002 OLA Junior “A” Draft, the Excelsiors continued to build for the future with four picks overall and Burlington had three selections in the two-round event. In all, twenty players were selected. A complete Draft list follows. -END-
