Indonesia appoints military and police head in Maluku islands
Indonesia has appointed an army general to oversee both the military and police in the
eastern Maluku islands.
A military spokesman says Major General Joko Santoso, a senior commander in the
army strategic reserve, was appointed as both provincial military commander and the
top security commander for the island chain.
He'll head the "Command for the Restoration of Security in the Malukus" - the single
command for the military and police that was announced last week by Security
Minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Outgoing Maluku commander, Brigadier General Mustopo is being moved to the
military headquarters in Jakarta.
The Maluku islands have experienced over three years of Muslim-Christian violence in
which more than 5,000 people died.
