Maluku separatist chief demands fair trial
JAKARTA (JP): After learning that the police had handed over his dossiers to the
prosecutor's office, separatist Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) chief Alex Manuputty
demanded that his trial be witnessed by independent foreign experts to guarantee a
fair trial.
Alex, currently being detained at the Indonesian Police Headquarters, may be
charged with treason.
Alex was arrested in connected with FKM's hoisting a separatist flag on April 25 to
celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the South Maluku Republic (RMS) movement.
Alex, from his detention cell in the Indonesian Police headquarters, demanded the
government invite experts from international institutions to witness his trial to ensure
justice, El Shinta radio station reported.
The separatist leader also asked President MegawatiSoekarnoputri to make sure that
human rights values were respected in Ambon
