MALUKU
General Situation
Three bombs were found 100 metres from the Telkom Building, the Governor's
temporary office, on Wednesday (26 June).
The Jakarta Post reported that Army Chief Pvt. Hanafi from the Pattimura Regional
Military Command is facing five years in prison and dismissal from active military
service for allegedly being involved in a bombing attempt at the Governor's Office in
Ambon in November 2001.
Assessments
CARDI visited Wayasel, West Seram, on Tuesday (25 June) to monitor its shelter
project through which it rehabilitated 50 IDP houses.
In West Seram, CARDI conducted a monitoring visit on Tuesday (25 June) in Kairatu
Village (where it is constructing fish ponds for IDPs and returnees), in Waetasi and
Kairatu villages (where it provided fishing equipment to returnees), as well as in
Seruawan, Waralohy and Hatusua areas, where it provided onion seeds, tools, and
training in agribusiness for returnees.
UNICEF sent a team to conduct an assessment on basic school needs in Masohi,
Central Maluku District.
Food Security and Agriculture
AcF distributed farming seeds and tools to 54 displaced families in Oma and Wasu
villages, Haruku Island, on Tuesday (25 June).
Health
MSF-B conducted 674 consultations through its mobile clinic programme throughout
the week in IDP camps in Ambon Island. It found 25 new measles cases in Salahutu
and Suli. It also found one case of cholera (confirmed by a laboratory) in Mandala
Camp.
IMC doctors based in Seram Island conducted its mobile clinic programme this week
and treated 335 patients in Suleiman area (west of Wahai) as well as 113 patients in
the mountainous area of Kobisonta. IMC doctors based in Buru Island conducted its
mobile clinic in Nalbesi on Saturday (22 June), treating 15 patients; in Wamkana (23
June), treating 35 patients; and in Kase Village (24 June), treating 15 patients.
UNICEF conducted a two-day training in Ambon for 40 health centre staff on
Management of Drugs from 25 to 26 June. It also conducted a workshop on Midwives
Supervision for 30 doctors and midwives based in Buru and West Southeast Maluku
on 27-28 June.
Water and Sanitation
MSF-B completed in Ambon the construction of soak-away in Cement Warehouse
IDP Camp on Tuesday (25 June) and began the construction of 2 latrines in Sakura
IDP Camp and one in Ruko Blok O IDP Camp on Wednesday (26 June). It completed
the construction of drainage and began the construction of soak-aways in Larier IDP
Camp, also in Ambon, on Friday (28 June).
MSF-B managed to conduct garbage collection for only one day at the THR IDP
Camp this week because of the blocking of Air Kuning dumping site by local
community. It continued to supply water to Suli TNI and Halong Navy Base IDP
camps throughout the week.
AcF completed the distribution of water and sanitation equipment in 17 villages in
West Seram on Thursday (27 June).
Economic Recovery and Infrastructure
Mercy Corps funded a local NGO to initiate a micro-credit programme in the Benteng
Market, in Ambon Island, this week.
Other
Mercy Corps conducted a one-day training on Wednesday (26 June) with its local
partner on employing the Do No Harm principles during project development.
Representatives from 25 local organizations attended the training.
NORTH MALUKU
General Situation
Acting Governor Harry Sinyo Sarundajang said he would take firm action against any
groups hampering the return program in North Maluku. He also said that inadequate
facilities such as houses could discourage IDPs.
Population Movements
Two displaced health staff from North Sulawesi visited their former work place in
Central Halmahera District. The visit arranged by the local health authorities and WHO
is part of a plan to encourage health staff in North Sulawesi to return to the health
centres where they worked before.
Assessments
AcF carried out a general assessment on food security and water and sanitation in
Wasile, Central Halmahera District this week.
Health
IMC continued its health activities treating 437 patients in Kao-Malifut, 180 patients in
Tobelo, 232 patients in Galela, 78 patients in Daruba, 111 patients in Posi-Posi Rao,
and 106 patients in Bere-Bere. Common health complaints reported were acute
respiratory tract infection, gastritis, malaria, myalgia, pneumonia, and cephalgia. IMC
conducted a Universal Health Precaution training in Bere-Bere and Daruba where they
also distributed sanitation equipment to the health centres. Similar training will be
carried out at Kao-Malifut on 29 June.
Education
World Vision, together with a local education body, organized activities involving
Muslim and Christian students at 2 junior high schools and 2 primary schools in
Tobelo and 4 primary schools in Kao this week.
UNICEF is planning the distribution of textbooks and school supplies as well as
"school in a box" packages to 75 schools in North Maluku. The assistance will be
through the local education authorities.
Economic Recovery and Infrastructure
World Vision facilitated the transportation of building materials-sand and river stone-for
3 villages in Malifut, 1 village in Tobelo, and 2 villages in Galela.
