MALUKU
Population Movements
Mercy Corps found during its assessment in South Buru (4-18 June) that 105
displaced families have returned to Wamkana Village. The families fled to the
mountainous areas around their village and could not return earlier because their
houses were burned down. It was reported that the government planned to build 100
houses for the returnees and had already given aid in the form of building materials.
Mercy Corps reported that there is an urgent need for a school. In Kase Village, 75
displaced families had also returned from surrounding mountainous areas. Returnees
said that the government is planning to rebuild 50 houses and rehabilitate 15 others.
Assessments
CARDI went on assessment missions to look at its economic empowerment projects
in Passo, Hutumuri, Toisapu, Waitatiri, and Hukurila villages, Baguala Sub-district,
and in Kilang Village, Sirimau Sub-district, on Wednesday (19 June); it also went to
Liang Village, Salahutu Sub-district, on Thursday (20 June). CARDI sent a team to
assess its water and sanitation projects in Passo Village, Baguala Sub-district, and in
Galunggung Village, Sirimau Sub-district on Thursday (20 June). It conducted a
shelter project assessment in Passo, Baguala Sub-district on Thursday (20 June).
Health
MSF-B conducted 634 consultations through its mobile clinic programme throughout
the week for IDP camps in Ambon Island, where it found 5 displaced children with
measles in the Liang Area, Suli TNI IDP Camp, and Tulehu IDP Camp. It informed the
local health authorities of these cases.
IMC doctors based in Seram Island conducted its mobile clinic programme and
treated 200 people in Tehoru Village and 121 patients in Werinama Village from 14-18
June). They also went to Niwelehu Village and to the mountain areas of Pasahari A,
Kobisonta Village, from 17 to 20 June.
IMC doctors based in Buru Island conducted 250 consultations through its mobile
clinic programme in Waimulang Village from 13 to 20 June, and conducted health
education on reproductive health to 300 high school students in Leksula Town in
South Buru District on Tuesday (18 June).
An IMC team from Ambon went to Masohi Town, Seram Island, on Thursday (20 June)
to conduct a 'reconciliation meeting' where Muslim and Christian hospital staff
members, who run separated clinics when the conflict began, could discuss
possibilities of working together in the Masohi Hospital.
Water and Sanitation
MSF-B is still conducting garbage collection for THR IDP Camp and supplying water
for Suli TNI and Halong Navy Base IDP camps throughout the week; all the camps are
in Ambon Island.
Shelter and Non-food Items
Mercy Corps conducted a one-day training on its new shelter guidelines to 35 Muslim
and Christian local NGOs at the NGO Centre in Ambon Town on Monday (17 June).
NORTH MALUKU
General situation
A local NGO, Lembaga Mitra Lingkungan (LML), with USAID-OTI assistance,
organised a dialogue on IDPs and returnees in Ternate from 18 to 21 June.
Government officials from North Maluku, North Sulawesi, international and local
NGOs, and IDP camp coordinators attended the 3-day sessions and discussed
problems of returnees and IDPs. The organiser will submit the recommendations to
both local governments. LML also invited over 20 journalists from Jakarta, Manado and
local media to meet with the participants at the end of the dialogue. The media
representatives accompanied by local NGOs and IDP camp coordinators will visit IDP
camps in North Maluku and North Sulawesi and meet returnees and local
communities in North Maluku over the next few days.
The North Maluku acting Governor, Harry Sinyo Sarundajang, warned at a military
ceremony on Wednesday (19 June) that fresh violence could again erupt in the
province if the people are not vigilant. He called on both Muslim and Christian leaders
to be wary of provocateurs that may use religion to damage the reconciliation
process.
Population Movements
CARDI's "Go and See Visit" team from Manado brought 15 IDPs to visit their place of
origin in Oba of Central Halmahera district from 17 to 24 June. CARDI also
film-documented the visit and will show it to IDPs in North Sulawesi.
Assessments
AcF carried out a general assessment on food security in Oba, Central Halmahera
and Obi, North Maluku District this week. Its water and sanitation team monitored
related activities in East Gane and Loloda, also in North Maluku District, during the
week.
Health
WHO visited Manado on Thursday (20 June) to assist Central Halmahera District
health officials coordinate with North Sulawesi Social Welfare and Satkorlak PBP
Officials the return of Central Halmahera's displaced health officials in Manado. WHO
has so far identified 18 health staff members who are interested in returning to North
Maluku.
This week IMC attended to 541 patients at the puskesmas in Tobelo and Galela
sub-districts, Daruba in South Morotai Sub-district, and Posi Posi Rao in North
Morotai sub-district. Common disease and condition reported were dyspepsia,
dysentery, musculo-skeletal disorders, gastritis, myalgia, malaria, upper respiratory
tract infection, cephalgia, dermatitis, pyoderma, and tuberculosis. From 12 to 18
June, IMC health staff members carried out immunization for 27 people at the
posyandu in Posi Posi Rao and Kampung Baru of North Morotai sub-district.
Water and Sanitation
World Vision distributed materials for the construction and rehabilitation of MCK,
polindes (village polyclinic), and water storage for 3 villages in Malifut, 1 village in Kao,
1 village in Tobelo, and 3 villages in Galela during the week.
Economic recovery and infrastructure
UNDP this week provided the North Maluku Satkorlak PBP with 2 computers to
strengthen their operational capacity.
