Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono: Indonesian Military to Hold the Single
Command in Maluku
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta :Next week, Indonesian government will start restructuring
the command in Maluku, according to Coordinating Minister for Political and Security
Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
"We've decided to restructure the command in Maluku. There will be only one
command there," he told reporters following a meeting held in Jakarta on Thursday
(23/5).
The government hopes that with the new structure of command, the security recovery
and law enforcement efforts would be carried out more effectively in the province.
In the new structure, Yudhoyono said, an Indonesian Military (TNI) general will hold
the highest authority in Maluku, with National Police high-rank officer as his deputy
and they will work together in leading functional task units.
"So, the subordination comes from the civil state of emergency authorities in Maluku
to this TNI general," said Yudhoyono.
He added that this chief would head all security apparatus, military and police, within
the province.
" I leave all decision on this matter to the TNI, National Police chief and also the Army
chief," said Yudhoyono said.
By establishing this new structure of command, the government is trying to avoid any
misunderstanding between the TNI and Police officers.
"With this task sharing, TNI and police officers will hopefully carry out their tasks
more effectively," said Yudhoyono. (Fitri Oktarini/Sam Cahyadi-Tempo News Room)
