Bio:
Odyssey was formed in November 2001, by which time Jonathan Skovron (guitar
and vocals) and Joel Witenberg (drums) had been composing music steadily for
around two years. Rodney Pollak (guitar and vocals) and Alex Burkoy (bass guitar
and vocals) began contributing frequently to the songwriting process, and in
September 2002 Odyssey entered the Melbourne Schools Contemporary Music Festival
competition, reaching the finals. The band draws its influences from a wide
range of artists and styles, particularly their contemporary local heroes such
as Silverchair and The Living End, and some of the older classics, notably The
Beatles and Supertramp. Although VCE studies hindered the band’s progress
towards the end of 2002, the end of the year saw the group tighten up into a
close and accomplished unit. Recently, Odyssey has begun playing local venues,
including the Prince Alfred Hotel, Bar Buddha and the St. Kilda Inn, with a
great degree of success and very positive responses.
They made it to the finals of the 2003 “Battle of the Sounds” at The Locker
Room in Colonial Stadium, and will play on 8 October 2003. Two of the band
members are currently studying music at a tertiary level, Jonathan Skovron at
the Victorian College of the Arts and Joel Witenberg at the Northern Melbourne
Institute of TAFE.
