Bio:
On September 4th 2001, Tommy and Ed met in a hostel in New York. Tommy was
emigrating from Scotland to Melbourne with his girlfriend. Ed was travelling
from London over to Oz with his Aussie girlfriend. The four reunited in Melbourne four months later.
With Tommy and Ed's interests both leaning heavily towards playing guitar, they
started jamming on a regular basis. After a few months a load of tracks had been
written with the intention of starting a band. They finally put an ad in the
local music press and happened to stumble across two guys who were keen for a
jam. Joe had been playing the drums for a few years and was looking for the
right band to get into. With Phil's previous experience in other bands, and with
the ability to write good tunes, he was looking for a band in which he could
have input into the song writing and arranging, in addition to playing bass.
After the first few rehearsals it was quite obvious this was a good formula. And
so the story begins.
The Vacant Lanes combine a hybrid music style of UK and Australian rock sensibilities. With three singers and influences ranging from The Charlatans to
You Am I, from Even to The Happy Mondays, The Vacant Lanes music always remains
diverse and interesting.
The Vacant Lanes' love for playing live, whether it be to a few mates or to a
busy venue shines through in their diverse, energetic set with songs ranging
from fast paced rock'n'roll tunes to alt country ballards to sparkly hooked pop
songs. On top of their nursery rhyme melodies, The Vacant Lanes use strong
lyrics with topics that most people can relate to ranging from current political
issues to longing for the weekend, from waking up with a bad head to just
getting high on life and always striving for more.
Since January they have had great success building up contacts, networking with
other bands and getting the name known. Having played at venues around Melbourne
including The Espy, The Empress, The Duke of Windsor, The Townhall, Pony and The
Cornish Arms among others, and with gigs in Bendigo and Geelong under their
belt, the sites are set for interstate gigs and the possibility of a summer tour
along the East Coast.
In March 2003 The Vacant Lanes recorded a five track demo. Originaly recorded
for putting around the major venues, the boys later decided to get a load of
CD's printed and promote it by having a launch. This was successfully achieved
with a packed crowd of punters at The Empress Hotel on 30th August.
They currently have a website under construction and an ever growing mailing
list that can be joined by e-mailing thevacantlanes@hotmail.com
