Sean Bean is a serious actor, focused on his work and passionate about his craft. Of course, Orlando respects Sean's devotion to his job and the intense concentration and effort he puts into all he does. There's no way he can fault the older man for wanting to make his role the best that it can be. But Orlando, while very serious about his job, is all about having fun. He reasons that life's no good if you don't enjoy it. That's why he's skeptical the first time he meets Sean. He gets the impression that though the man seems nice enough, they'll never become the best of friends. That all changes the day that Orlando sees Sean smile -- really smile -- for the first time, even, white teeth bared and sparkling eyes reflecting his grin. It's absolutely gorgeous to see Sean's face transformed from solemn to joyful. The thing that really awes Orlando, though, is the way the skin around Sean's eyes crinkles just so. It's stunning and captivating, and Orlando wants so very much to kiss those crinkles, to feel Sean's happiness under his lips. He wants to lick those tiny wrinkles and taste amusement on his tongue. Then Sean's smiling eyes flicker over to meet Orlando's, and he realizes the smile has fallen off his face the moment after Sean's drops off of his. Orlando grins again, quickly, wanting to recapture that smile and those crinkles, but they're gone. Sean just quirks an eyebrow and turns back to Billy.
The day they shoot the "Boromir teaches Merry and Pippin to swordfight" scene (as Orlando so eloquently labels it in his mind), Sean smiles almost non-stop. He laughs, too, and that's nice. The whole time, all Orlando can think is how he wishes he were closer so that he could memorize the look of lighthearted amusement on Sean's face and map those tiny crinkles with hungry eyes. He settles for listening to deep chuckles interwoven with cries of "For the Shire!" and Dom and Billy's laughter.
Orlando loves it when he makes Sean grin, when he coaxes those crinkles from hiding. It's a personal, greedy triumph each time Sean smiles at him...for him. One day when they're standing side by side, waiting to start shooting, Orlando glances over to see Sean smiling to himself. Then his hand is brushing the side of Sean's face, fingers tracing the corner of his eye. Sean stops smiling and looks questioningly at Orlando, whose fingers haven't moved. "Why were you smiling?" Orlando asks, voice quiet and hoarse. "Just because," Sean answers, blinking. Orlando feels the movement on his fingertips. "Do it again," Orlando whispers. Sean hesitates for a moment, eyes searching Orlando's. Then the corners of his mouth lift, and he does. END
