About the UCFC The University of Calgary Fencing Club is one of the oldest sport fencing organizations in Calgary. In 1963, Don Laszlo created the club so the University (then the University of Alberta, Calgary Campus) could enter a team in the Western Finals that year. The UCFC has been around in various forms since that time. The UCFC is not a varsity club, so we are open to everyone of all skill levels. We offer foil, sabre, and épée in both dry and electric. The UCFC practices twice a week on the University campus. We fence Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m, in the Gold Gym, located in the Kinesiology Building. Click here for online registration. Fall terms starts September 14. See you then! Membership costs (not including GST) per term are listed below.
The UCFC continues to run an adult beginner's class. This class is for people who want to learn how to fence, and have no previous fencing experience. Those with prior fencing experience, please join the club! This introductory course offers newcomers the chance to try fencing, while learning some of the history and traditions behind the modern sport. The class begins with basic footwork and Foil handling, progresses to supervised bouts, and finally, free-sparring with members of the Fencing Club. After completion of the course, fencers have the option to continue training by joining the club. Participants require indoor athletic shoes, a T-shirt, and sweat or track pants (no shorts permitted). All other equipment is provided. Recommended for men and women ages 15 and up.
