"Contorted smile"

@Uootem

He senses her approaching
That uniquely cherished lost love
Right out of another more youthful time
That he still remembers as if it were yesterday.

Will she recognize his once familiar face
That time has changed without pity?
Will she remember what they once shared?
And would it matter if she did?

He must believe she still knows him
For he never really lets go of futile hoping
That reaches from beyond the truth of reality
Formed by the layers of time that separates them now.

A contorted smile he must find
So she will not detect his lasting torment
Of the loss of a love that still haunts
For he misses her so much these days.

Her magical illusion fills his senses
with the emotions that hold on tight
for they will dance across the many tomorrows
without hoped-for conclusions.

A touch of time like this is so liquid
A gentle breeze of a moonless night
That moistens the depths of a heart surrendered
Tears... the cost of remembering.

What will this moment cost him
As he stands in the cold winter rain?
The twisted smile now removed
The day has passed its zenith with her leaving.

Magical moments are full of briefness
Reminding him of the sheer fragileness of butterfly wings
And his heart that quivers with longing still
A longing that grips him tight...
Never to conclude in contorted smiles.
