"These Things I Didn't Know"

Love of youth is most often momentary.
"I love you" words were only playground commentary.
The focus of immature hearts change as they grow,
that before you came to my life, you would surely go.

You were my first, the feelings were new.
I didn't know how love takes hold, but i thought i knew you.
I didn't know we were just love learning,
that is was all just a natural adolescence yearning.

The craving embraces of girls and boys,
are just childhood lessons, games and toys.
That all the emotion we thought we meant,
From adult perspective would seem quite different.

That in those days of youthful play,
You would touch my soul in an unusual way.
That time would only strengthen the hold
that binds my heart to a warmth of love, now grown cold.

I have always written poetry, but to have to write like this
To pen the words of the love I miss
Seemed so alien, so foreign a task
Why it had to become like this, a question I ask
