SAN JOSE

About San Jose

Forty Spanish families and two hundred Indians founded San Jose in the year 1783. The Exodo of the Uruguayan people started in this city and the first "Asamblea General Constituyente" was held in this place.

San Jose has an area of 4992 km2; it is an industrial city and its economy is 19.5% and the cultivation of potatoes is 60% of the national production. There are about 500-cheese producer in the region.

To the south, we find the beauty of Kiyu riverside resort near the ravines of San Gregorio. On the west, there is a forest bordering the resort called "Boca del Cufre" and in the northeast, we find the "stone rivers" of the "Sierra Mahoma".

San Jose has a majestic theatre, "Bartolome Maccio", a famous Cathedral and the square "Independencia" where there is the first monument built in Uruguay to the memory of our hero, Artigas. It was built by Dante Costa and designed by Blanes.

In October there is cattle exhibition and in April the locals celebrate "the Gaucho's day", a good opportunity to enjoy their hospitality.
