Mrs. Jessup teaching children                      The MALL’s theme

What is the M.A.L.L.?

The MALL is Upland Elementary’s Maximum Achievement Learning Lab. It provides a learning environment to meet each individual student’s needs. Our goal is for all students to learn and reach their greatest potential.

How does the MALL work?

Some students come at a scheduled time. This is set up by the classroom teachers and the MALL teachers. All other students come to the MALL as the need arises. Their teacher may request them to come. A parent may request it, or the student may ask to come. The MALL provides instruction in reading and math. For all other subjects, assistance is given as needed. The MALL is a place for students who need to be challenged, but also for students who may be struggling with their classroom work. The MALL is actually for everyone-whenever they need help.  It also provides a place for all students to be challenged in different areas, through the use of learning centers.

Why do you think the MALL is important at upland Elementary?

The MALL is a vital part of our school because it has allowed all students to be challenged and strive to do their best.  It demonstrates that all of us need help sometimes.  That assistance can be given, as it is needed.  It gives students opportunities they may not otherwise have.  It also provides a place for students of different ages and grade levels to have experiences together.  We all learn from each other.

What is your favorite part about the MALL?

That’s easy-the students!  I enjoy working with students of different ages, grades, and abilities.  I like the opportunities the MALL provides for them.

What do you think the kid’s favorite part about the MALL is?

The centers are popular, particularly the bikes and the keyboard.  The guinea pigs are special too!

How does the MALL help children learn?

The MALL does assessment to identify a student’s need, or uses assessment done by the classroom teacher.  Once the need is identified, the strategy for teaching is determined.  One advantage of the MALL is that there area a wide variety of teaching tools available.  We have many resources available.  We use visual, auditory, and Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences in teaching students.  We build on a student’s strengths.

Could anyone come to the MALL and have a great time?

ABSOLUTELY!!  The MALL is for ALL students!  Not only are there centers, but we also have many games and other activities students can use.
