Orienteering Resources and Suppliers
Orienteering is a household word in many parts of the world but in the United States you may need some help finding resources. Most of the titles and supplies for orienteering will not be available to you locally. The titles listed below are excellent and the suppliers have all of the orienteering stuff you’ll need.
Map and Compass Discover the Excitement by Erkka Laininen. This is a great book for classroom teachers interested in adding the excitement of maps, compasses and orienteering to their curriculum. It provides an excellent overview of the subject across all disciplines. It includes map and compass instruction, curriculum suggestions, and lesson plans.
Be Expert with Map and Compass by Bjorn Kjellstrom. If you are going to utilize orienteering in your classroom you really need to try it yourself. This book is comprehensive and easy to read. It will develop your understanding of the sport and help you bring your orienteering experiences into the classroom. You can probably buy this book at your local bookstore.
Teaching Orienteering by Carol McNeill. This is a great resource for teachers interested in presenting orienteering as a separate activity or a unit in Physical Education classes. It is well illustrated, has a lot of different activities, and has suggested grade levels for each activity.
Video – Orienteering – The First Steps by Michael Person and Richard Warner. This is an excellent introduction to basic map reading and orienteering skills. It will give students a good idea what running their first orienteering course will be like.
