History of Hang Gliding & Paragliding

[ Icarus 5 supine pilot ]

Twist-grip activated drag rudders were used for steering. When both were deployed simultaneously they steepened the glide to facilitate landing.

The photo shows a major difference between the Icarus V and a modern 'class 2' hang glider. Notice the large number of struts and wires bracing the structure, both above and below the wing. (The same was true of semi-rigids like the Fledge and the Quicksilver.) A modern class 2 wing (shown further on in this history) has, at the most, just two side cables plus four fore-aft cables. And no top rigging whatever.
