History of Hang Gliding & Paragliding

[ More wires than you can shake a bowsprit at ]

The 1978 Antares, although by no means a Gryphon clone, was broadly similar in layout.

The Antares was built by Eipper-Formance Inc., a California-based manufacturer founded by Dick Eipper. (Eipper-Formance! Geddit?)

To the best of the Author's knowledge, the Gryphon was the first tail-less bowsprit-rigged flexwing. A number of previous flex-wings, including the Australian Tweetie and the British Gulp, were bowsprit rigged. They all featured tail-planes and vertical fins (looking like an airplane) rather than the flying wing's use of sweep and washout to provide pitch stability and a tendency to yaw correctly into a turn when banked.
