History of Hang Gliding & Paragliding

Powered Safari -- Paris

The yellow object strapped above the keel tube is presumably flotation foam.

Although the powered hang glider was developed into the faster, more expensive and complex, and heavier powered ultralight (categorised as microlight in Britain), the turn of the century saw a reversal of this trend. The new powered hang gliders that emerged around the year 2000 differ from Len's powered Skyhook Safari in several respects. Not least of which is the attachment of the engine and propeller to the rear of the harness. This results in a thrust line below the aircraft's center of mass. The danger of a pitchover resulting from a power-on stall is thereby negated.
