Can you identify a domain name? Well it would start as http://www. but the rest of thing may differ. We will have a close look at domain names. As I have already indicated http:// is the starting part.

http:// = stand for hyper text transfer protocol
www = world wide web (some people say “world wide wait”)

After that the real name, it may be or trade name, name of an institute or any thing with letters and numbers. For example I will take my host. http://www.oocities.org

Now the part after www. is geocities, it is the name for the server. In here most people use a combination of letters (and numbers) to represent their identity.

After the server name is .com, it’s known as domain name extension. What is It is there for to say the purpose of the web site in this case .com stands to say that it is a commercial service. There some more extensions. First I give you traditional ones.

Is that all? no. According to the country that the site serve one more part is added. That is country code. For Sri Lanka as an example .lk is added at the end of domain name.

As you learnt so far you can say it is a commerce related site belong to Sri Lankan government. Let’s have some more country codes for example.
