What operating system do you have? May be Windows, but
which version? Many people depend on Windows, but have you ever noticed
there some other operating systems too. If you like you can install more
than one operating system in your computer (please refer to the requirements
of the specific operating system before install it). Here we will have a
look at the options you have in the OS world.
|

|
DOS
Abbreviation for Disk Operating System. Microsoft's
first successful OS. Comparatively difficult to use, we have to type every
command and had to remember all the commands. Windows changed it in to a GUI
(graphical user interface) method.

WINDOWS
You know it, Mr Gates grand child. Since its firs introduction in 1981,
there were several versions of it. For example Windows 3.1, Windows 98, and
the latest Windows XP (XP stands for eXPerince) and the coming Windows
Longhorn. Since its GUI concept, got good attraction from computer users
from all over the world.

|
UNIX
Old man. Originally developed by Bell Labs and distributed freely to
colleges in the US with its source code. That’s why we have many different
versions of it. For example B&D unix, System V, OSP/1 and XENIX. Many big
networks use UNIX and it is the alternative for Windows NT.

|
LINUX
New boy and main rival for Microsoft OS’s. In 1991 Finland student Linus
Tovalds developed it and distributed with its source code for free. So you
may see handful of Linux brands such as SuSE Linux, Red Hat Linux, Turbo
Linux, Corel Linux and Lindows. This is a free OS, you can download it from
the web and change the code to make your own version of Linux.

|
OS/WARP
Out of the race. Microsoft originally developed this OS for IBM in 1987.
Because of Windows success they handed OS/WARP to IBM and developed Windows
further. Now very rarely heard about it.

 |
Mac OS
If you own a Mac (an Apple computer), most probably you get it. This is the
widely used OS for Apple computers and developed by the Apple Corporation.
They come with rich graphics and other multimedia.
|
|
Be OS
Rarely used OS. Promises best performance for multimedia developers. But
little hardware manufactures support it.
