Toronto Harbour

Black Bullhead
Other Names: Bullhead, River Cat.

Locations: G Ross Lord Reservoir, High Park, Humber River.

Habitat: From early spring to late fall Black Bullheads are found in shallow, muddy ponds, calm stretches of rivers, and back bays.

Description: Brown or Black on top to rusty yellow to white on bottom. 6 barbels. Stiff pectoral and first dorsal fins, watch out!

Size: Anywhere from 4 or 5 inches to 1 or 2 pounds. Anything bigger than 2.5 pounds is a big guy. No current Ontario or World Record.

Food Value: Ok. An average tasting catfish. The small ones are quite good.

Game Qualities: On light and ultralight gear they put up a pretty good fight. Catfish deserve a better reputation as game fish.

Tackles and Baits: Black Bullheads are good targets for light spinning tackle and small baits, such as earthworms, crickets and cut baits. The best rig to use is the "Jackson River Rig" pictured below. I usually use a medium or light rod w/ 10lb test line in case I run into a snag, a Channel Cat, or a Common Carp.
