Toronto Harbour

Common Carp
Other Names: Carp.

Locations: G Ross Lord Reservoir, Credit River, Harbourfront Seawalls, Leslie Spit, Lake Ontario near river mouths, Humber River, Rouge River.

Habitat: During late spring/early summer they run into shallow bays and up rivers to spawn. Roam the flats and the seawalls with deep water in Toronto.

Description: Looks like a giant gold fish with dark to light brown coloration from top to bottom. Broad shoulders with a powerful hind area and tail.

Size: Average is about 5-10 pounds. A 20+ pounder is one nice catch! Ontario record 38 pounds.

Food Value: Europeans enjoy the taste but Carp is really not worth wasting a meal on.

Game Qualities: All specimens pull hard and long. A better fight than a Channel Cat of equal size.

Tackles and Baits: "Eating size" fish in the rivers are good targets for light spinning tackle and small baits, such as earthworms, crickets and cut baits. For a trophy catch, try heavier gear, and live Shiners or Bream. Good rigs to use are the "Jackson River Rig", Float Rig, Hair Rig, and the Surface Rig.
