Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines

This year, 2003, has been a surprisingly good year for movies considering the last good year we had was probably back in 1999. It's a little premature to say this but I feel that Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines should take movie of the year. By far it beats out the highly acclaimed Matrix Reloaded and it destroys The Hulk.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is finally back and it's safe to say he's found a good movie to make a comeback. Already 55 years of age, he still has the charismatic, macho, tough guy look that we all know and love. For $30 million dollars to play the role, it's expected that he'll keep character. Ever since Terminator 2 - Judgement Day, the best role we've seen the actor play was as Freezer in Batman & Robin. And that wasn't as good as I was hoping. In T3, Schwarzenegger plays a similar role to it's predecessor. However, instead of trying to save John Conner (Nick Stahl), the man who will lead the resistance against the machines, the Terminator is sent back in time to save Kate Brewster (Claire Danes), one of the lieutenants for Conner. The relationships between the characters is quite interesting as it Brewster has to learn and build her trust with the others. It seems apparent that her mundane, average American life was never presented with such an outrageous situation, which is fair to say. The main goal of the movie is to shut down Skynet and stop the virus, which turns out to be itself, from further infecting others. If it gets too far, Judgement Day will surely come where the machines take over.

But of course, things are not going to be easy for trio. With every great movie, is a great bad guy, or should I say bad girl. A surprising role for the powerful killing machine, TX played by Kristanna Loken. One word, bad-ass. She hardly says a word in the movie but just by her appearance you can tell she doesn't take shit from anyone. Her targets to take out, as previously stated, were John Conner's lieutenants. She knocks off a few before finally reaching the next one on her list, Kate Brewster. Unfortunately for her the Terminator has been sent back in time to save her. Throughout the movie, the two machines go all out rarely fighting hand to hand. It's for sure that the crane scene through the town will be remembered for a long time. But what makes TX different from the other antagonists in the previous movies is the ability to control a machine. Meaning she can go hotwire your car and drive it down the street without her even being in the vehicle. Also, her plasma cannon and flame thrower are nice additions to her weapon artillery.

To sum up, Terminator 3 is an excellent movie with non-stop action throughout the movie. It shall prove good competition for movie of the year.

5 out of 5 stars.
