OBITUARY
ARTHUR JAMES URIE
The news on the market this morning of the sudden death of Mr. Arthur Urie came as a great shock. A lifelong Cradock resident and a member of a respected family of long ago Mr. Urie was a well-known figure. His father, Mr. John Urie, was jailor for many years, with which office was combined at that time that of Location Superintendent. "Hy het baie goed met ons gewerk"(He worked very well with us) is the tradition that has grown in the Cradock Location since then.
Mr. Arthur Urie has been Location Superintendent for nearly twenty years and his term of office has been marked by consideration for those over whom he had authority. Among the old respectable residents he will be sincerely mourned and the memory of many kindly deeds cherished.
During the 'flu epidemic in 1918 his services were much appreciated and a letter of thanks from the Native and Coloured people was published in The Midland News. It speaks well, too, for the good feeling existing in the location that during Mr. Urie's illness in hospital of many months Mrs. Urie was able to carry on his work.
For years he has been ailing but the heart symptoms have been distressing at times recently. It was seldom that he took a holiday but his recent trip to the Fort Beaufort district was a happy event and one his family will gratefully remember. Tomorrow he would have celebrated his 64th birthday had he lived.
To Mrs. Urie and his children, Mrs. H. Bell, in Port Elizabeth, Mrs. Hardy in Port Elizabeth, Arthur in Durban, Marjorie, a student at the Training College, here, and Ronald, also his sister Mrs. John Schooling of Cradock, we tender our respectful sympathy.
The funeral will take place from the Wesleyan Church tomorrow at 3.30 pm. The Native people, we understand, are hold a service in the location and will walk in procession to the Wesleyan Church and follow the cortege from there.

Extract from THE MIDLAND NEWS, CRADOCK - 12 MAY 1930

One of the largest and most impressive funerals ever seen in Cradock was that of Mr. Arthur Urie, for twenty years Location Superintendent, which took place yesterday afternoon.
The service took place in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and was conducted by the Rev. F.P. Evans. In the course of a brief address he said that the presence of those in the Church, and the great company of coloured people waiting outside, amongst whom he had spent so great a part of his life, showed the high respect in which their friend was held. "When the news got about that he had been called away, many of them gave expression to their grief in tears.
We believe that to-day in many of those homes there is sorrow and mourning, because they feel they have lost one who was to them a real friend," said the preacher. He added that such a tribute was evidence of success and faithfulness. "he was faithful in his work and appreciated by those amongst whom he worked." Mr. Evans added a few words of deep sympathy with those who had been so suddenly bereaved of a devoted husband and a kindly father. The service was concluded with the Death March in Saul, played by Mr. Brown.
Outside the Church were lined up a large number of Coloured and Native people, residents of the location, who, marshalled by Mr. M.J. O'Connor had followed the body of their friend thus far on its last journey, and were waiting to accompany it to its final resting-place.
Headed by the Mayor and Town Councillors, with the deceased's fellow municipal workers as pallbearers, the large number of mourners and friends, with members of the local public services moved off to the cemetery. As it did so, the leading men of the location took their places quietly in its rear, and were followed by their fellow-residents - men, women and children, to the number of well over a thousand. As the procession wended its way slowly along the scene was singularly striking. A short service at the graveside concluded an impressive ceremony - the large attendance, the numerous beautiful wreaths and the very evident sense of loss all testifying to the esteem in which Arthur Urie was held by everybody.

TOWN COUNCIL'S TRIBUTE
Before going into Committee on Location matters this morning the Town Council, by a standing vote, recorded its sympathy with Mrs. Urie and the family in its bereavement. The Mayor, Cr. M.J. Hattingh, said that the deceased had served the Council for quarter-of-a-century, twenty years of which as Superintendent of the Location, and was most reliable and efficient in the discharge of his duties.
He was comparatively speaking a young man and it was sad to think that he should have been taken away at this stage. They felt for Mrs. Urie and the family who had their deepest sympathy.
