(Daughter of Wilhelm and Frances Nesemann. Born at Fish River, district Cradock, Baptised 3 January 1863 in the Congregational Church, Cradock)
Baptismal records reveal that at the time of his marriage to Augusta, John was a clerk at Steynsburg but that seems to have been before Wilhelm and Frances Nesemann went to settle there.
John was a clever and upright man who ran the family bakery and grocery business situated in High Street. The business was founded in 1890 and in the brochure marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the town of Cradock, mention is made of the fact that 2500 loaves of bread were made daily. The business, it will be noted, was then in High Street but from the following advertisement it will be seen that by 1901 the business had moved to Adderley Street.
"The finest sweets in town
Over 200 varieties and all guaranteed fresh
The best bread and confectionery in town
orders promptly attended to
Summer drinks of all kinds
Groceries of all descriptions at reasonable prices"
JOHN URIE, Adderley Street (next to Midland News)
(Appeared in the September and October issues of the CRADOCK RECORDER in 1901)
Both John and Augusta seem to have been victims of the black flu epidemic of that period. Augusta had become very frail and died in June 1918, while John's demise followed scarcely nine months later.
