Indonesian court clears two of involvement in Marriott bombing
Two alleged members of Jemaah Islamiyah have been cleared by an Indonesian court
of involvement in last year's Marriott hotel bombing in the capital, Jakarta.
But both have been jailed on other charges.
The South Jakarta district court found that Surono did not take part in the Marriott
attack, however he had broken laws on the storing and use of explosives.
Surono admitted that in 2002, as head of a Jemaah Islamiyah logistic team, he
received and stored a cardboard box from a fellow JI member, which contained
ammunition, firearms and bomb-making chemicals.
At another court in Jakarta, Edi Suprapto was cleared of taking part in the Marriott
bombing but was sentenced for falsifying information to obtain identity papers and a
passport for another JI member.
Suprapto was also found guilty of providing another now-convicted member of the al
Qaeda-linked group with a house.
Both men received three year sentences, falling short of the 10 years demanded by
prosecutors.
