Bali bomb lawyer to use Indonesia's decision on anti terror law
One of the key conspirators behind Indonesia's Bali bombings could walk free if an
application due to be made by his lawyer to a Jakarta court is successful.
The defendant, known as Idris, is on trial for his central role in the Kuta bombings and
in the Marriott Hotel blast in Jakarta nine months later.
Idris's lawyer has told his trial that the recent Constitutional Court ruling that found a
section of Indonesia's anti-terror laws could not apply retrospectively, meant the
charges against Idris for the Bali bombing should now be thrown out.
Our Indonesia correspondent, Tim Palmer, says it is the first time that last month's
controversial ruling has been raised in court in the defence of a terrorism suspect.
Idris, also known as Joni Hendrawan, is alleged to have helped plan the Bali attack,
obtain the vehicles and properties used, train the Sari Club bomber and detonate the
smallest of the three bombs himself.
He is likely to face a verdict before the end of the month.
