Papua man jailed for 10 years for treason
A court in the Indonesian province of Papua has reportedly sentenced a man to 10
years in jail for treason.
The Jakarta Post newspaper reports Yance Hembring, 50, was found guilty of
instigating a rebellion against the state.
Court officials say Hembring took part in several meetings in 2003 and 2004 to
discuss the province's independence and the method to be used to secede from
Indonesia.
They say he also set up a secretariat for the separatist Free Papua Organisation.
The AFP news agency reports Hembring, who was arrested in January, has admitted
to being a leader of the organisation since 1999.
The Free Papua Organisation has been fighting a low-level rebel war since 1963 when
Indonesia took over the territory from Dutch colonisers.
