Aceh separatist leaders released from arrest in Sweden
A Swedish court has released two exiled leaders of an Aceh separatist group, after
their arrest this week on charges of breaking international law by directing the struggle
from afar.
Malik Mahmud, and Zaini Abdullah, were detained on Tuesday on orders of a
prosecutor investigating them on charges of grave breaches of international law.
Swedish news agency T-T said a court near Stockholm had ruled that the evidence
was not strong enough to keep the two leaders in custody.
GAM spokesman Bakhtiar Abdullah said he believed the two leaders had been
released unconditionally.
The embassy of Indonesia, which has long lobbied for action against the GAM
leaders, said the charges still stood and the investigation would continue.
